Economic Division

Introduction

The Economic Division is the wing of the Department of Economic Affairs that focuses on economic policy research and advice. It anchors the publication of the Annual Economic Survey that is laid on the table of the Parliament prior to the Annual Union Budget. The division also publishes the Monthly Economic Review. The Division interacts with credit rating agencies and multilateral institutions on the analysis and assessment of India’s macro-economic and fiscal outlook and long-term prospects. By virtue of its broad domain and canvas, the Division has wide-ranging sectoral responsibilities, discharged through its constituent subject units, under the supervision of the Chief Economic Advisor.

Mandate of the Division

The mandate of the Division is to conduct economic analysis and tender policy advice. This entails analysis of quantitative and qualitative information on a variety of economic issues and related programmes and policies, drawing policy level inferences and presenting them in regular internal briefs and discussions, flagship publications and occasional policy papers.

Functions of the Economic Division

  • Advisory functions on domestic and international economic trends.
  • Monitoring of Prices and policies relating to price control.
  • Monitoring Employment Situation and trends in Agricultural and Industrial Production.
  • Monitoring of Monetary and Credit Aggregates.
  • Preparation of Annual Economic Survey and Monthly Economic Report.
  • Organising Pre-budget meetings of the Finance Minister.
  • All issues related to Cadre control and Cadre management of the Indian Economic Service.
